Song Story: One Thing

This song was birthed out of an encounter I had in the midst of a corporate worship time. I was on my face and asked God, like Moses did… Show me Your glory!

I began to have a vision (in the spirit) where I saw images of God’s creation flash quickly through my mind. I saw mountains, waterfalls, animals…. and I said “Wow! God’s glory is seen in creation.”

Then it zoomed out and I saw stars and suns and planets and galaxies…. colors and shapes and majesty. I said “Wow! God’s glory is seen in the heavens.”

As the images swirled faster and faster it stopped suddenly and there was one image in front of me….

Jesus on the cross.

I was stunned. The glory of God is seen most clearly in a bloody Jewish man hanging on a cross.

This was God’s glory personified. This was the “word became flesh” of whom it was said “we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father” (John 1:14). He is the “image of the invisible” (Colossians 1:15) and the “brightness of His glory” (Hebrews 1:3). God responded to Moses’ request by offering to let “my goodness pass before you.” Surely this goodness manifested is Jesus. David was captivated by this beauty and glory and declared One thing I have desired of the LordThat will I seek: That I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord” (Psalm 27:4).

After this encounter I came home and began crafting the song. It was a song that took a while… write a verse… wait a few months… write a chorus… wait a few months…. etc. The theme grew over time and also took root in my heart. It is a cry to see, know, love and encounter God’s glory through the Holy Spirit in the man Christ Jesus. Nearly every line has a Scripture reference (or two) connected to it, which I also like. 🙂 Enjoy!
