20,000 young adults gather to learn about prayer at the Onething Conference

Note: This is part 1 of a series of articles on the Prayer Movement

I am sitting here at the Onething conference in Kansas City, where 20,000 young adults are gathered to learn about prayer. Yes… you read that correctly. 20,000. Why? Prayer. It is one of the many signs and wonders related to the global prayer movement that has exploded onto the earth in the last twenty or so years.

The term “movement” has become another Christian buzzword, but the prayer movement is a true movement. There is no central organization or single leader. It is a genuine work of the Holy Spirit in our generation. It spans cultures, streams, denominations and nations. It is so widespread that it is even hard to track all that is happening. From 24-7 prayer rooms to tent cities on the National Mall in Washington DC, from all night prayer watches in remotes villages to tens of thousands gathered in stadiums, this worship & prayer movement is exploding!

One of the most fascinating facets of this global prayer movement is the idea of day & night prayer. In the 1980s, there were a few known groups that organized in shifts to pray 24/7, but now there are an estimated 20,000 24-hour prayer groups. Some of those groups gather in corporate prayer in dedicated prayer rooms and some take shifts to pray wherever they are. Many of them include music and worship as part of the prayer expression.

This raises many questions…. Why is this happening? Is it biblical? What is a house of prayer? What is a “furance” of worship and prayer? How does this movement relate to the local church? How does this movement relate to evangelism and missions?

New Blog Series

I have taught about the prayer movement in more detail, but I am going to take some time to write about it on the blog in the coming weeks and months. Stay tuned via email, Instagram or Facebook to make sure you don’t miss a post!
